Profile:

Jaime Mas-Oliva is Professor of Biochemistry at the Institute of Cellular Physiology, National University of Mexico since 1982. He received his Medicine degree (1976) from the National University of Mexico, and Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1980) from the Cardiothoracic Institute, Imperial College for Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of London, Great Britain. In 1987 and 1990 he was visiting Professor at the Gladstone Institute for Cardiovascular Research, University of California San Francisco, California, USA.

His main scientific interests correspond to the understanding of the correlation established between protein structure and function with an emphasis to the potential application of new findings.

He has published close to 130 papers, obtained 3 patents and filed two more on the use of peptides as diagnostic tools and therapeutic agents. He has served as president of the Executive Committee of the Latin American Network of University Programs for Health Research (2004-2012) and received the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987. Amongst the prizes received, he has been awarded with the National Prize from the Mexican Academy of Sciences (1988); the “Manuel Noriega Morales prize” (1993), granted by the Organization of American States; the Medal of Merit 2001, granted by the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, Canada; the “Jorge Rosenkranz Award”, Roche, (2006 and 2010); and “Premio Ciudad Capital Heberto Castillo” (2011), Institute of Science and Technology, Mexico City.
